Blue Badge eligibility: who can get one and what it unlocks
A Blue Badge helps disabled people and people with health conditions park closer to where they need to go. It can also be the gateway to local parking concessions, vehicle registration schemes and other travel-related help.

You may qualify automatically because of a disability benefit or sight registration. If not, your council can still assess you based on how your condition affects walking, safety, journeys, parking machines or travel near vehicles.
People who may qualify automatically
GOV.UK lists several automatic eligibility routes. The most common are disability benefit routes linked to mobility, sight impairment, and some armed forces payments.
- Higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance.
- PIP mobility moving around score of 8 points or more.
- Registered blind or severely sight impaired.
- War Pensioners Mobility Supplement.
- Certain Armed Forces Compensation Scheme awards.
- PIP mobility planning and following journeys descriptor E, 10 points.
You can still apply if you do not qualify automatically
Not having the right PIP or DLA award does not always mean no. Your local council can assess other mobility, safety and non-visible condition routes.
- You cannot walk, or walking is very difficult.
- Walking would be dangerous to your health or safety.
- You have a severe disability in both arms and drive regularly.
- A child under 3 needs bulky medical equipment or must stay near a vehicle.
- A non-visible condition makes journeys near traffic, vehicles or car parks very difficult.
What you usually need to apply
You should expect to provide proof of identity, proof of address, a recent photo, contact details and evidence of any relevant benefit award or medical condition.
If you rely on PIP, the assessment scores matter. For a Blue Badge, councils often need the part of the PIP award letter showing the mobility scores, not just the first page.
